Various Methods for Running Windows 98

Introduction

Windows 98 is a difficult system to get running through emulation or virtualization. Here I list some methods that are currently available.

Dosbox-x

Windows 98 can be installed into Doxbox-x by following the official guide. Having Windows 98 configured using Dosbox-x allows for save states, something that other methods may not allow.

86Box

86Box emulates machine hardware. By selecting the correct hardware and mounting the Windows 98 installation media, you can install the operating system. A guide can be found on Github.

A list of pre-made systems can be found at https://archive.org/details/recommended-vm-configurations-of-windows-for-86box. They are based on instructions at https://betawiki.net/wiki/Draft:Recommended_VM_configurations/Windows.

VMware Workstation 17.x

Windows 98 can be installed using VMWare Workstation. There is a guide available here.
